"Codex Atlanticus - Artifact #42" Art Card featuring Paper Weaved Border stamps by Lost Coast Designs

Howzit Everyone!

My fantasy scifi story continues from yesterday's project 'Portal To Atlantis' and I've got more fun uses for border stamps to share with you!

LSBD Log:  Day 31 - We have been exploring the strange ruins but its slow going with a lot of the chambers submerged under water but we are making some surprising discoveries.  Today's exciting find has made it all worth it - ref. catalogued artifact #42 the 'Codex Atlanticus'.  We have managed to translate a few sentences on the tablet depicting the Codex and believe it to be some kind of a cipher device but the meaning of the numbers and text on the right panel are still unknown .  The wealth of technology we are finding down here is astronomical...

I used the following Lost Coast Designs stamps on my fantasy art card:
Borders:  Tear Drops, Spiral, Wave, Antique Text, Tape Measure, Numbers and Bingo and the wonderful Steampunk Typewriter Girl image as the focal point of my card.

Codex Atlanticus - Fantasy Art Card

I still had border strips left over from my previous project and used them to create the basket weave panel on the left.  The borders were all stamped with Paris Dusk Memento ink.

Tightly weave the Spiral, Wave and Tear Drops border strips to form the panel in the photo above.

Cut a panel from the yellowish paper that I used for the weave strips and create a background of border stamps with a combination of Paris Dusk and Rhubarb Stalk Memento inks.  In the photo above starting from the left I stamped the Antique Text, Numbers, Tape Measure, Antique Text (again) and Bingo borders.  Adhere the border background panel to the basket weave panel with double sided tape and glue a strip of black cardstock over the join with a glue stick.  Cut a frame for the entire panel from black cardstock and score, fold and cut the corners to form miter joints.  Put double sided tape on all four flaps and adhere them to the panel.  The basket weave background panel is now nicely encased inside the black frame and has an awesome dimensional quilted feel to it!

The isosceles triangle piece above is left over from my previous project too...see 'Portal To Atlantis' for more info on how I made my own Perfect Pearls Mist background!

Stamp the Steampunk Typewriter Girl image onto the triangle panel with Black Memento ink.
Apply a thick coat of Distress Crackle Paint - Clear Rocky Candy over the entire triangle panel.  I really love Distress Crackle Paint especially the clear Rocky Candy!  It's a one step process that gives your projects that wonderful vintage crackle and it dries flexible too so it doesn't peel off!  Blockheads currently has all of the colours, metallics and the clear on sale so grab them while they're hot ;0)

Apply Stormy Sky Distress Stain all over the crackled surface to reveal the wonderful crackle effect and wipe away the excess ink with a piece of paper towel.

Adhere the panel to a black cardstock mat with double sided tape.  Punch small holes in each corner of the card front with a hole punch and attach square silver brads.  Adhere square dimensional antique bronze embellies (Michaels) to each brad with glue.

To make the silver metal tag cut a long narrow piece from a thin sheet of silver metal and stamp the 1/8" text into the metal with a steel alphabet stamp set.  I stamped out the name of the tagged item 'Codex Atlanticus' but switched out some letters with numbers and used an upside down 'V' for the letter 'A' instead.  For more a distressed look I wasn't super careful about getting all the letters straight and to make the stamped letters stand out better I coloured them with an ultra fine black Sharpie marker.  Fold the metal tab in half and punch a hole through both ends and attach the tag to the card front with a silver brad.  Finish off by making a folded card from black cardstock and adhering the card front to it with double sided tape.

Lovers of fantasy scifi will get the significance of the number '42' and you'll probably be interested to know that the Codex Atlanticus is actually real!  Its a twelve-volume, bound set of drawings and writings by Leonardo da Vinci.  The book contains 1,119 leaves dating from 1478 to 1519 and the contents cover a great variety of subjects, from flight to weaponry to musical instruments and from mathematics to botany. The codex was gathered by the sculptor Pompeo Leoni in the late 16th century and is currently preserved at the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan.  Check out all the photos of the pages on the web!  Awesome aren't they!!!!

Thanks for visiting with me again today, I hope you've enjoyed my Creative Adventure into fantasy scifi land and now have some great ideas for using border stamps!  Also check out the fantastic creations by my design team mates Colleen, Leslie #1 and #2 and Trisha!
