Wow, where did July go?  I can't believe tomorrow is August 1st already!  Before August arrives I've got a super cool whimsical double-slider card to share with you on this last day of Christmas in July!

My card features a beautiful Christmas Tree stamp available from About Art Accents on the front and the double-slider treat inside features the gorgeous Christmas Dragon stamp (KG-004-Q) available from Third Coast Rubber Stamps!

I made this card for my 4 year old nephew, Daniel, and personalized it with my own message on the front!

"Daniel!  What could be hiding beneath the Christmas Tree?"

 To make the main center part of my slider card I cut a large 5.5" x 12" panel from red cardstock and scored fold lines at 3.75", 7.5" and 11.25".   For the Slider sections I cut two 3.5" x 5.5" panels from red cardstock.    I then cut out 4 mats from patterned paper just slightly smaller than the red panels and 4 panels from white cardstock slightly smaller still but only after I did all my stamping.

 

I stamped the Christmas Tree with Memento Tuxedo Black onto white cardstock and coloured with Copics in shades of green.  I coloured the baubles on the tree with various Copic colours and also did a few in metallic gold with a fine point paint pen.  I then added dimension to all the baubles with drops of Judikins Diamond Glaze and cut out the panel once the baubles were dry.  I then wrote my message around the Christmas Tree with a fine point black Sharpie marker and added sparkle to the tree and message with touches of glitter glue.   I edged the panel with a gold metallic paint pen and punched a tiny hole at the top of the Tree and embellished with a small gold star brad.  I then adhered the Christmas Tree panel to the patterned paper mat and then to the main center part of the card with double-sided sticky tape.  I then punched a half circle notch on the right hand side of that middle section which is where the ribbon sits and allows you to pull out the slider.

 

Stamp the Dragon image twice onto white cardstock with Memento Tuxedo Black ink and colour with Copics.  I used various shades of blues and purples on the Dragon and blues, reds and green on the present.  I also used a red Prismacolor pencil to add some background shading around the Dragon.  You only need to colour just beyond the half way point on each image coz part of the other portion is cut away and the rest remains hidden inside the center section of the slider card.  I also added sparkle with touches of glitter glue.  I then cut out the two panels and edged them with a metallic gold paint pen.  I then layered the panels on to the patterned paper mats and then adhered those to the red slider panels with double-sided sticky tape.  I cut two pieces of ribbon and attached them to the right hand slider panel with a mini gold brad.

 

 Stamp the Merry Christmas sentiment onto another piece of white cardstock and colour with Copics.  I coloured the stars with a fine point metallic gold paint pen and also added touches of sparkle with glitter glue.  I cut out the panel and edged it with a metallic gold paint pen and adhered it onto the patterned paper mat and then adhered to the back panel of the main slider card with double-sided sticky tape.

Next comes all the assembling.

Tutorial

I challenged my DominoART yahoo group members to create Make & Share projects for our August 2010 Challenge based on the poem 'To A Butterfly' by William Wordsworth.  I took from the poem the beauty and fragility of the butterfly and was inspired to design a 'double domino' standing ornament of a Fairy Butterfly!  I absolutely love fairies and I knew immediately I wanted to use the Masked Fairy Girl rubber stamps by About Art Accents!

There's a couple of different Masked Fairy Girls available but the two I used are on plate 147: Fairy Girls

 

  

For this tutorial I'm concentrating on the Blue Fairy Butterfly.  The Green Fairy Butterfly tutorial will be coming soon so keep an eye out for it!

I used 2 standard white dominoes and stamped the front and all 4 sides of both dominoes with portions of the Butterfly Masked Fairy Girl II in coal black Ancient Page dye ink.  Stamp and heat set each side separately to avoid smudging the images.

I always start my Sharpie colouring by laying in the darker areas first and then I use a lighter shade of the same colour to blend, shade and fill in the areas.  I used Blue and Turquoise Sharpies for the background.

 

The skin is Almond, hair is a combo of Brown & Marigold, dress and flourish detail is Purple & Lilac. I then added DecoColor metallic gold accents.

 

To finish off the bottom edge of the dominoes I edged and overlapped a bit onto the back of each so you don't see any white when the two dominoes are glued together.  Seal all surfaces with Judikins Diamond Glaze.

 

For my Fairy Butterfly wings I used some acetate wings I have for my ceramic art, but you can easily make your own!  I've made my own wings out of acetate before and they work great!  Adhere the wings to the domino with Judikins Diamond Glaze and then glue both dominoes together.  Even though the Diamond Glaze is meant as a dimensional accent and for hard glass-like surfaces it's awesome as a glue too!

 

I randomly bent and twisted metallic blue craft wire for the antennae and finished with a drop of Diamond Glaze on the ends. Once the glaze was dry I coloured it metallic gold and also added a touch of opal glitter glue.
I then glued the antennae into the top groove between the two dominoes with Diamond Glaze. I also accented the wings with glitter glue for a touch of sparkle.

I'm thrilled with the way my Fairy Butterfly turned out.
Even though I designed her to be a standing ornament you could easily make her into a magnet ornament too by just gluing a magnet to the back.

Pocket Fairy Field Journal

This one is for all the Fairy watchers out there, you know who you are ;-)  This little Pocket Journal is perfect to keep with you at all times coz you just never know when you might spot a rare Flower Fairy out in the field and need to jot down notes and make sketches on the back of the enclosed Flower Fairy Note Cards!

I was inspired by the gorgeous fairy rubber stamps available from About Art Accents and the wonderful packaging that Stride gum comes in to design this project.  I was very excited to then discover that a box of business cards I have in my stash for altering fit perfectly into the slots of the gum packaging!  Once I had what I needed I pulled the gum packaging apart so I could reverse engineer the construction and make my own template.  I plan to re-use the actual packaging for a future project coz it has a wondeful minty scent ;-)  Once I had the template ready I cut the Pocket Folio out of white cardstock.  Scored all the fold lines with a bone folder and stained it with Distress Inks to age it.  I used Vintage Photo first and went over that with Old Paper and blended both into the cardstock with a sheet of Bounty paper towel.  I then edged parts of the Pocket Folio with a metallic gold paint pen.  I folded and assembled the Pocket Folio with double-sided sticky tape once the inks had dried.  I then coloured a T!m Holtz Elements Grungeboard label frame with a metallic gold paint pen and aged it a bit with some Vintage Photo ink.  Once that was dry I marked the placement of the holes on the Pocket Folio lid and used a small hole punch to make the holes and attached the label frame to the Pocket Folio with two mini copper brads.  I then made the label with a Dymo Label Buddy.

I then moved onto creating the little Field Note Cards for each Flower Fairy.  The business cards I used are made from glossy cardstock.  I stamped the fairy images with Memento black ink and coloured them with a variety of Sharpies, Marvy Brush, Le Plumme and Tombow markers.  The sky background was created by stippling on the Marvy marker inks with a Stampscapes Tonal Applicator*.  I added little details to each design with either a silver or gold extra-fine metallic paint pen. 

 *TIP:  When I stamped the fairies onto the business cards I then stamped the images again onto a piece of printer paper and cut out 'masks' for each fairy.  I then used the masks to cover the fairies while I stippled on the background inks.

I then ran the cards through my Xryon to add permanent adhesive and adhered cream cardstock to the back of each one (covering up the business card info).  Once that was done I edged some of the cards with a metallic gold paint pen and the remainder with a silver paint pen to correspond with the metallic details I mentioned above.

This next step can be quite scary so I included a few photos below to show you what the Fairy Field Note Cards looked like before I aged them.  I aged the cards by smearing Distress Ink Vintage Photo directly onto each card and spreading it around with a piece of Bounty paper towel and then did the same to the backs.  I finished off each card with a Dymo label showing the name of each flower fairy.
